From the Lowlands comes Birdy Flap, a clear clone of a well-known game with a familiar title. In this MSX2 challenge, the space bar is your one and only key to survival.
It’s great to see sceners from the nineties returning to the classic 8-bit gem known as the MSX. Back in the glory days of the demo scene, a Dutch group made a big splash with their music-focused productions, even creating the very first real music tracker for the MSX. Yes, that’s the FAC. Now, one of their music composers, Erik Duijs, has joined the current dev show with entry #39: Birdy Flap, featuring a charming SCC soundtrack.
Birdy Flap is, of course, an adaptation of the famous original Flappy Bird by Dong Nguyen. The concept is simple: guide the bird through a never-ending scrolling maze without hitting anything. One bump, and it’s game over – just like that. The SCC soundtrack takes inspiration from Konami’s Parodius and Chopin’s Prelude in E minor. Trust Erik to come up with such great tunes.
Note that openMSX’s auto ROM detection isn’t recognizing it as a Konami SCC cartridge. So, either insert an SCC extension into slot 2, or load the game ROM itself as KonamiScc in slot 2 (the game looks for an SCC in slot 2 only). A command file has been added to handle this automatically.
