The MSXdev24 game competition has recently closed its enrollment period for contestants to submit their creations. With an impressive total of 31 new MSX games, the community has once again demonstrated its enduring vitality and love for 8-bit wonders.
Who would have thought that, more than 40 years after its first hello to the world, the MSX computer system would still be a source of enjoyment for many people around the world? The long running MSXdev competition is living proof of this. Initiated as a platform for indie developers to showcase their 8-bit skills, the compo boasts over 20 years of existence, with MSXdev24 being the latest edition.
Exactly nine months age on May 1st, 2024, MSXdev24 opened doors for developers to enter with new games for any MSX system. MSXdev24 uses the freestyle edition this year which means that anything goes as long as the game can run on MSX. No matter what MSX generation, hardware, extension, or screen it is running on. The range of registered games varies from base MSX1 16KB games to MSX turbo R with external hardware as a result. With the deadline of February 1st, 2025 just passed, a grant total of 31 games are registered.

It is now up to the jurors to play, inspect, and rate all of this beauty in order to determine a winner – it is a match after all. But let’s not forget that all contestants are true winners in the first place. We can not emphasise our appreciation enough, you are the heroes of this compo! To celebrate, the MSXdev has a bucket full of donations and sponsored items to give away.
But, let’s not get ahead of ourselves and wait for the juror team to come up with the final decision in about six weeks.
In the meantime, enjoy all the new MSX games that the MSXdev24 compo has registered and don’t forget to smile. Let us strive to keep the MSX spirit alive for many years to come!
